From hospital back to local therapy
After 4 months of battling with her life, she was, in February 2020, taken to Okuta General Hospital, where her critical condition drew our attention. The hospital could not render much help to Aisha as her grandmother opted for Discharge Against Medical Advice (DAMA). It was later gathered that this decision was due to lack of money and/or ignorance. Thus, Aisha was taken back to her forest settlement, where her condition grew worse. To further complicate the matter, she was placed on local therapies, including heating a metal and placing the “red hot metallic object” directly on the surface of the highly inflamed wounds (injection abscesses). They believe this practice kills germs and brings about quick wound healing. More sadly, Aisha was going to endure this life-threatening therapy/suffering for yet another 2 months.

Aisha was found…

The relocation of Aisha back to her forest settlement was quite disturbing. Nobody knew about the outcome of her deteriorating health. Language barriers and security concerns were major challenges in searching and locating the innocent girl. Also, it was almost impossible to identify the exact location of the girl because there are many large forests in the region. First, Phos Aid International informed the police, and also partnered with local residents to search and locate Aisha's family. Consequently, after a 2-month thorough hut-to-hut search, on Easter Sunday, 12th April, 202, Aisha was found writhing in excruciating pain due to the complicated injection abscesses.

Immediately, the first intervention pharmacist was to stop the devastating local therapy. Thereafter, she was placed on the right doses of the right antibiotics, and together with physiotherapy for 3 weeks, Aisha was relieved, and she gradually started walking normally.
